Protecting servers and applications is a crucial factor in ensuring security and high availability. Many attacks result in denial of service (DoS). A server crash stops production, incurring financial loss for the company.

However, installing an authentication system on a fragile system that can easily be "hacked" into is not the answer.

A firewall is essential, but on its own the protection it offers is not sufficient. It cannot detect attacks targeted at HTTP servers, or at vulnerabilities and failures in the application, such as SQL Injection.
